Luano derives its name from Luano valley which covers about three quarters of the district. The district was separated from Mkushi by the Government of the Republic of Zambia 2012 to enhance and increase efficiency and effectiveness in the provision of local authority services in the province.

Luano district is about 260 Km Northeast of the Capital City, Lusaka, 125 Km from Kabwe and 106 Km from Mkushi of Central Province and lies at 29o 21’ E and 14o21’ S. Luano district is divided into two: the valley and plateau, and it covers a surface area of 9643.54 square kilometers. To the east, Luano district shares its boundary with Nyimba in Eastern province, in the south-east is Rufunsa in Lusaka province and in the west is Kapiri Mposhi in central Zambia.
