Mafinga district was created from the former Isoka East Constituency by his Excellency Former President of Zambia Mr. Rupiah Banda on 27th March 2011. This creation was meant to bring development closer to the people of Isoka East who travelled long distances to access services in Isoka central business area.

The district occupies the total surface area of approximately 4,134 square kilometers. It is situated in the eastern part of Isoka and is 154Km away from Isoka administrative center and about 1,134 Km from Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. The district is located between Latitude S10° 14’40.9’’ and Longitude E033° 21’53.8”. The district has an altitude of about 15,183.0 meters above the sea level. It borders Isoka district to the Northwest, Chama district on the Southern part and Malawi on the Eastern side.
