Mumbwa dates to 1967 as an administrative center and it is a home to two national parks namely the Kafue and Blue Lagoon. It is said that the settlers failed to correctly pronounce the name Mumbaa (the name of a local chief) and instead pronounced it as Mumbwaa thereby giving the district its present name.
