Nakonde is one of the eight (8) districts found in Muchinga Province of Zambia. It houses the Nakonde town council which was established in 1994 after the abolishment of Rural Councils following an integrated Local Administration Act of 1980 that saw the establishment of all district councils in the country. The district has a dual administrative structure with the Mayor heading the Local Authority while the District Commissioner presides over central government functions at district level.
The district lies between 32°10' and 33°02' east of the Greenwich Meridian, and 9°04' and 9°49' south of the Equator. It covers an area of approximately 5515.3 square kilometres. The district shares international boundaries with Tanzania in the north and Malawi in the east. Furthermore, the district shares district boundaries with Senga Hill in the Northwest, Mungwi in the West, Chinsali in the South-west, and Isoka in the South-east. It is approximately 1,015 kilometres from the Zambian Capital, Lusaka.
