A delegation from the Local Government Association of Zambia (LGAZ) has embarked on a peer learning visit to Malawi. The delegation is there to explore how Malawi and the Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA) have successfully increased women’s participation in local governance and draw lessons from the Association’s revenue enhancement initiatives.
The 10-person delegation includes LGAZ's Vice Presidents from Copperbelt - Cllr. Johnson Kang'ombe, Muchinga- Cllr. Chota Kanungwe, Local Government Gender Equality Committee Chairperson - Cllr. Annie Kapandula, and representatives from Southern and Northern Provinces, Kazungula Council Chairperson Cllr. Mbozi Tatila and Kasama Mayor Cllr. Theresa Kolala respectively.
Along with them are the LGAZ Executive Director Ms. Mpatanji Namumba, Director of Finance, Mr. Sangulukani Isaac Zulu , PMI-WILL National Project Coordinator, Mr. Stanley Chanda, Finance & Administrative Officer, Ms. Nancy Kachumi and PMI-WILL Programme Officer for Gender Equality, Ms. Esther Mwale.
This morning, the delegation had the privilege of paying a courtesy call on Mr. Richard Chimwene Banda, Minister of Local Government,Unity and culture, and Mayor Esther Sagawa of Lilongwe, who is also MALGA President, marking the beginning of an insightful and impactful exchange.
The purpose of the visit is to learn from Malawi's strategies and successes in fostering women’s leadership and political participation at the local level.
They were ably hosted by staff of the MALGA.
