Eastern Province is one of the 10 provinces in Zambia. The province covers a surface area of about 51,476 square kilometres, sharing its borders with 3 Provinces namely, Muchinga Province to the north-west and Central Province and Lusaka Province to the south-west. The province also shares its border with Malawi and Mozambique.
The province is headed by a Provincial Minister appointed by the President, as the political head of the province. The administrative head of the province is the Permanent Secretary, who is also appointed by the President. Eastern Province is divided in 15 districts, namely, Chadiza District, Chama District, Chasefu District, Chipangali District, Chipata District, Kasenengwa District, Katete District, Lumezi District, Lundazi District, Lusangazi District, Mambwe District, Nyimba District, Petauke District, Sinda District and Vubwi District. Chipata is the capital for the province, serving as an administrative centre of the province. According to Zambia Statistical Agency (ZAMSTATS), in 2015, the province had a population of about 1,813,445 with 915,604 females, representing 50.49% and 897,841 males representing 49.51% of the total population
Eastern province economy is based on agricultural and livestock, trade, and value addition activities. Agriculture and livestock are the major economic activity in the province trade and value addition activities have also clustered. Eastern Province benefits from its location alongside the Malawian border with reports of agricultural trade into higher value cross-border markets. Chipata city is home to significant manufacturing clusters, particularly agro-processing manufacturing of peanut butter which is exported to all parts of the country. Eastern Province is best known for the spectacular Luangwa Valley, abundant wildlife, the dynamic Luangwa River system, Chipata hosts the annual Nc’wala ceremony, and is a popular access point to the South Luangwa National Park. Traditionally, the province is governed by Chiefs, which includes Chieftainess Mwase Mphangwe, Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people, Paramount Chief Kaonga Gawa, etc. The most predominantly spoken language is Chewa.
