Southern Province is one of the 10 provinces in Zambia, and home to Zambia's premier tourist attraction, Mosi-oa-Tunya (Victoria Falls). The province is the third largest Province in Zambia, covering a surface area of about 85,283 square kilometres, sharing its borders with 3 Provinces namely, Central Province, Lusaka Province, and Western Province. The province also shares its border with the Zimbabwe in the south divided by Victoria Falls, Botswana and Namibia.
The province is headed by a Provincial Minister appointed by the President, as the political head of the province. The administrative head of the province is the Permanent Secretary, who is also appointed by the President. Southern Province is divided in 15 districts, namely, namely, Chikankata District, Chirundu District, Choma District, Gwembe District, Itezhi-Tezhi District, Kalomo District, Kazungula District, Livingstone District, Mazabuka District, Monze District, Namwala District, Pemba District, Siavonga District, Sinazongwe District and Zimba District. Choma is the capital for the province, serving as an administrative centre of the province. According to Zambia Statistical Agency (ZAMSTATS), in 2015, the province had a population of about 1,853,464 with 937,977 females, representing 50.61% and 915,487 males representing 49.39% of the total population.
Agriculture, and tourism are the major economic activities of the province. Agriculture is the primary economic activity in Southern Province with a mix of small holder and commercial maize farms across the province. Southern Province is also home to the "Sweetest Town in Zambia", Mazabuka, where sugarcane farming and sugar processing are a major business. The dominant farm produce includes Sorghum, maize, other commercially important activities include sugar cane plantations, and cattle ranching.
The former provincial capital of Southern Province, Livingstone, is Zambia's tourism hub and home to international tourist attraction Mosi-Oa-Tunya (Victoria Falls). Situated across the Zambezi River, Livingstone competes to be a jumping off point for tourism to the region that includes other attractions such as Lochinvar National Park and the Kafue Flats in the north, the Zambezi and Batoka Gorges in the south, Chobe National Park in Botswana, Kafue National Park in Zambia, and Lake Kariba on the Zimbabwe border. Tourism is a large and growing part of the Zambian economy
Traditionally, the province is governed by Chiefs, including, Chieftainess Mwenda, Chief Chikanta, Chief Mukuni, Chief Monze, Chief Hamusonde, Chief Sinazongwe, etc. The most predominantly spoken language is Tonga. Other languages spoken in the province include Toka – Leya Tonga Baila.
