North-Western Province is one of the 10 provinces in Zambia. The province covers a surface area of about 125,826 square kilometres, making it the second largest province in the country according to area, only second to Western Province which sits at 126,386 Square Kilometers. North Western Province shares its borders with 3 Provinces namely, the Copperbelt Province, Central Province, and Western Province. The province also shares its border with Angola in the west, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
The province is headed by a Provincial Minister appointed by the President, as the political head of the province. The administrative head of the province is the Permanent Secretary, who is also appointed by the President. North-Western Province is divided in 11 districts, namely, Chavuma District, Ikelenge District, Kabompo District, Kalumbila District, Kasempa District, Manyinga District, Mufumbwe District, Mushindamo District, Mwinilunga District, Solwezi District and Zambezi District. Solwezi is the capital for the province, serving as an administrative centre of the province. According to Zambia Statistical Agency (ZAMSTATS), in 2015, the province had a population of about 833,818, making it the smallest population despite it being the second largest in Surface Area, with 418,577 females, representing 50.20% and 415,241 males representing 49.80% of the total population.
Agriculture, Mining, and tourism are the major economic activities of the province. Sorghum is the major crop in the province. While less well-known for copper production than neighboring Copperbelt Province, North-Western’s output has surpassed that of the Copperbelt in recent years. North-Western Province is the source of the mighty Zambezi, Africa’s fourth-longest river, it also features West Lunga National Park, Mutanda Falls, and Northern Kafue National Park. Traditionally, the province is governed by Chiefs, including, Senior Chief, Kasempa, Senior Chief Kanongesha, Senior Chief Saliunga, Senior Chief Musele, Senior Chief, Mukumbi, Senior Chief, Kalilele Senior Chief Mujimanzovu, Senior Chief Ishindi, Senior Chief Ndungu, etc.
The most predominantly spoken language is Lunda – Luvale, and Kaonde. Other languages spoken in the province include Luchazi.
